Cultural Activities

Promotion of Punjabi Culture:

Inter College & Inter University Cultural Festivals :

In order to preserve and promote traditional Punjabi culture amongst the younger generation, the Academy organises Inter College and Inter University Cultural Competitions in Bhangra, Gidha . Punjabi folk songs every year. All the colleges affiliated to Delhi Universities are entitled to participate in Inter College Competitions Universities from all over India are invited for Inter University Cultural Competitions. Cash prizes and Trophies are awarded to winner teams in both the competitions.

Programmes in Open Areas :

Punjabi Academy organises programmes in different parts of Delhi in the open areas with a view that the authentic Punjabi folk songs and music should reach the door step of Punjabi music lovers. These programmes have received a tremendous response from the public.

Punjabi Cultural Programmes in schools & colleges :

Under this scheme, the Punjabi Academy helps in providing artists and musicians to encourage schools and colleges in organising cultural programmes in their institution. Besides, coaches are also provided to teach students Bhangras, Gidha folk and light music and also theatre techniques. The programme devised by the students under the guidance of these coaches provided by the Punjabi Academy are presented before the parents of the students and the audience in their neighbourhood.

Punjabi Theatre Festival :

The Academy has been organising Punjabi Theatre Festival every year as a result of which many theatre groups have come into existance in Delhi as well as in Punjab. Apart from the original plays of Punjabi, adaptation from other Indian languages and Foreign languages are also included in the Academy's repertories to encourage writers, directors and artists in the field of drama. Apart from fees of the Directors, cash prizes for the best Script, Direction and excellence in Acting are awarded by the Academy.

Under this scheme, Punjabi Academy provides assistance to voluntary cultural organisations who are engaged in the propagation of Punjabi culture. The assistance is provided in the form of sponsoring of artists, Auditorium subsidy and printing expense.

Rules & Regulations for sponsoring of programmes :

  1. The NGO should be registered body with sound financial background.

  2. The Academy will sponsor only Artist to the concerned NGO and their fees is directly paid by the Academy at their approved rates.

  3. All other arrangements i.e. stage, light, sound and local security will be the responsibility of the NGO.

  4. The NGO is required to mention Academy's name on each and every publicity material i.e. Invitation cards, Banners, Posters, Newspapers, Advertisement, Press Release etc. The show must be opened for general public and no ticket will be sold by the NGO. The NGO should apply 15 days before the show.

  5. The programme should purely be a cultural show without involving any political or religious group.

Organising of Annual Punjabi Mela:

In order to exhibit and promote the ethnic value of celebration in Punjab for the younger generation of Delhi a Punjabi Mela is organised in a spacious ground where a typical Punjabi Bazzar in which Punjabi Jutti, Nale, Parande, Punjabi Suits, Phulkari, Wooden and other Artifacts are displayed and are also available for sale. In the Mela eroding instruments which are used by the peasants, all folk instruments of Punjab like Damroo, Bugdu, Chimta, Bean, Algoza, Rabab are displayed. Over all it is a nostalgic remembrance for the people of Delhi who had left their roots in Punjab and are settled in Delhi. Not only nevertheless the eminent artist from Punjab are invited to sing before the audience on the rythmic punjabi beats. The Academy plans to organise this mela as an annual feature.

Presentation of Traditional Arts of Punjab :

The Punjabi Academy has been endeavouring in all these years to invite participation from all Punjabi speaking areas representing the best in traditional and contemporary Artistic Activity in Music Dance and Visual Arts. The Punjab has always been renowned for its beautiful 'Bandishes'(Compositions) and these have enriched the repertoir of Hindustani Classical Music. Punjabi is the only other language apart from Brij Bhasha in which Kheyal 'Bandhishes' have been written over the centuries. In order to revive an interest in them, the Punjabi Academy has been organising regular programmes of Sufiana Qualam Classical Music and Punjabi ghazals. Promotion and Propagation of Punjabi literary activities :

Kavi Darbars on National Days :

The Punjabi Academy organises Poets Meet on Independence Day and on Republic Day, as a part of the national celebrations. Poets from all over India are invited for participation on the prestigious National functions. In addition, the Academy organises regular Shairi programmes for upcoming poets.

Punjabi Kahani Darbar

The Academy invites the renowned as well as upcoming/ budding Punjabi short story writers at regular intervals. The short stories are recited before selected audiences and discussions are held. Thereafter the idea is to encourage the debate on Punjabi short story and to enable the writers to have the reaction of the readers about their creative writings.

Organising of Seminars and Symposia

The Academy has a scheme to organise Seminars and Symposia on various literary themes about the History and Development of Punjabi literature in its various forms and phases. The Academy also provides financial assistancee to the Delhi University and its colleges for organising such seminars. The papers read during the seminars are edited and published in the form of book for the benefit of the research scholars.

Special programmes are organised on the occasion of national integration and communal harmony/celebrations of anniversaries of Sufi poets.

The Academy arranges special programmes in collaboration with other organisations/ institutions to project the importance of national integration and communal harmony. It also organises programmes in a proper manner on the birth and death anniversaries of literary luminaries who had contributed a lot in the field of Punjabi literature and culture.
