Major initiatives and policy decisions in The year

Language Bill

In order to give Urdu & Punjabi a status of second Official Language of Delhi, The Delhi Official Language Bill-2000 was passed in the assembly and sent to Govt. of India for the assent of Hon'ble President of India.

Monuments Protection Bill

In order to preserve and maintain the monuments in Delhi other than those of National importance maintained by Archaeological Survey of India, a bill entitled Delhi Ancient and Historical Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains has been sent to the Govt. of India for accent of the Hon'ble President of India.


Concept of Bhagidari is in-built in major programmes of Academies and S.K.P. The NGOs as well as the eminent writers/poets/students of schools, colleges and universities are involved in organization of different programmes and activities like- Seminars, Conferences, Poets-meet, Training, Workshops, programmes in colonies, celebrations of Indian Festivals etc. and other interactive programmes of literature, music, dance, theatre and fine-arts. The programmes are also sponsored and conducted in collaboration with schools/colleges and other literary, social, cultural organizations.

With a view to provide Library facilities for the weaker sections of the society 60 libraries have been opened so far in each of the 43 Assembly Constituencies. This scheme is being implemented under the Bhagidari Scheme with the involvement of 60 NGOs who are responsible for the running and day to day maintenance of these libraries. During the Ninth Five Year Plan 47 libraries were opened.

Asian Film Festival was organised in association with M/s Netpac India, a prominent NGO in the field under Bhagidari at three venues in Delhi. Delhi audience got a chance to see 50 foreign and Indian films.

Special efforts are made to involve NGOs, RWAs, PSU and Corporate bodies in the maintenance and up keep of the monuments under the over all supervision of the Department of Archaeology under specific guidelines through and MOU.
